Daniel Hill
Hill’s sonic journey began at age seven when he became fascinated by capturing sounds with his father’s cassette tape recorder and then with two tape recorders discovering overdubbing and flanging. He began making biophonic field recordings and was interested in how outside sounds such as a recording of crickets sounded in the interior of his bedroom and in turn, how with headphones that sound fills the interior of the skull, and the architecture of the mind. When at age nine his father tragically passed away, Hill consciously turned to music and visual art as refuge, therapy, and medicine. At age thirteen he started playing bass guitar, formed a band and began composing, which along with field recordings became another lifelong practice. The story of Hill’s music cannot be told without his visual art. An actively exhibiting painter, he has been known more for his paintings than music, but he likens the two practices to the polarities of a magnet- pushing, pulling, informing, and activating each other, and spinning like an electric motor. Hill evokes a kind of imposed synesthesia, making paintings that move and sound that stands still, even composing music tailored to be listened to while painting. His music has ranged from ambient, drone, soundscape, experimental, rock fusion, microtonal, and electro-acoustic. His music has never been officially released, with tapes, CDs, vinyl, and SoundCloud links shared with friends and friends of friends. Now with EchoSonic Records, that materials as well as all new material have a home.
